Global National: Dec. 6, 2022 | Alberta Children's Hospital cuts services as flu epidemic surges

In tonight's top story: The flu epidemic is tightening its grip on Canadian pediatric hospitals, with over half of flu cases being made up of children between the ages of two and nine. As Heather Yourex-West explains, the crushing wave of respiratory viruses has forced Alberta's children's hospital to cut services at some outpatient clinics in order to redeploy staff to deal with emergencies. Canada's auditor general released a report on the federal response to the pandemic, finding that $4.6 billion in COVID-19 benefits were claimed by ineligible recipients. Mackenzie Gray examines the billions more in pandemic relief still under scrutiny, whether the government can get the money back, and reactions from Liberal and Conservative party officials. Delegates from around the world gave their opening remarks to kick off the COP15 biodiversity conference in Montreal, and will spend the next two weeks discussing the best way to protect the planet's nature. But as Mike Armstrong reports, there is cautious pessimism surrounding the meeting due to the history of past discussions which have tried to address the climate crisis. Plus, voters in Georgia are at the polls for the second time in the last 30 days, casting their ballots in the critical Senate runoff between Democratic incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. Farah Nasser looks at why there's so much at stake for this election, even with the Democrats having already claimed a majority in the Senate. Former Canadian women's national soccer member Diana Matheson announced plans to launch Canada's first professional women's soccer league, aiming to kickoff their inaugural season in 2025. Mike Drolet explains which clubs are confirmed to be founding members, and speaks with gold medallist Christine Sinclair about the importance of this exciting development. On this episode of Global National: There's no doubt that the respiratory virus season is hitting hard and fast this year. It's forcing hospitals across Canada to make some desperate changes. As Marney Blunt tells us, all this comes amid new cautions from the World Health Organization, as drastic measures are being considered worldwide to slow virus spread. A major change is coming soon to Canada's assisted dying laws and it's already causing division among medical experts. By March, it will be legal for people with mental health issues to receive medical assistance in dying (MAID). But some of Canada's top psychiatrists, and families of patients, are warning that will set a dangerous precedent. Touria Izri has more on their concerns. For nearly three decades, the United Nations' "COP" process has attempted to negotiate and implement treaties on climate change. This week, a similar process has begun to reduce plastic pollution across the planet — but it won't be easy. As Redmond Shannon reports, the consumption of plastics continues to grow despite threats to our environment and health. Plus, the world's largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, has been a sight of beauty for thousands on Hawaii's Big Island. But now transportation officials are concerned as lava flowing from the volcano is threatening to close the island's main highway. The burning liquid is about 5 kilometres away from shutting it down. Jennifer Johnson has the latest. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith followed through on a campaign promise by introducing the Alberta Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act last week. Mercedes Stephenson spoke with Premier Smith about her reasoning behind the act and the message she’s sending to Ottawa. Plus, the video could belong on any international music channel and the artists signed to any famous record label. But the talented bunch performing in the single They Fly isn't too hard to reach. They can be easily found walking the halls of Howard S Billings High School in Châteauguay, Que. Gloria Henriquez has the story. On this episode of Global National: This cold and flu season has come in with a punch, and the combination of medicine shortages and overwhelmed hospitals has led to parents and medical professionals taking on more than they could handle. In Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., cases of the flu are higher than they've been in decades. But is our immunity compromised, is it a lack of vaccines or a combination of both? Ross Lord gets some answers in tonight's top story. In the U.S., there's been a major surge in cases and hospitalizations for the flu and COVID-19 after the Thanksgiving holiday. Flu hospitalizations haven't been this high, this early in the season, in over a decade. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has tracked about 9-million cases of the flu and 4,500 deaths. And COVID-19 cases are spiking too. As Jennifer Johnson reports, hospitals across the country are struggling to keep up. In consumer news, record-high inflation is hitting many Canadians hard. It's especially making a difference at a time of the year when people spend — and give — money. Marney Blunt has more on how many families will juggle rising costs with the expenses of the holiday season. Plus, thousands of delegates are gathering in Montreal as the United Nations' (UN) COP 15 Summit starts on Wednesday. With the UN reporting that the earth is experiencing its largest loss of life since the dinosaurs, the event to examine ways to preserve biodiversity and protect global ecosystems couldn't come at a more crucial time. As Amanda Jelowicki tells us, what the delegates will agree to is still being negotiated. In Saskatchewan, resident Dwayne Belcourt is asking health officials to re-consider their rules for organ and tissue donations after his late husband Merril Donkin's tissues were disqualified. “They basically asked me if [Donkin] had intimate relations with a man in the last five years,” Belcourt explained. Kabi Moulitharan has the story. And finally, Dr. Anthony Fauci, U.S. President Joe Biden's chief medical adviser, spoke with Global News' Washington Bureau Chief Jackson Proskow, as he prepared to step down after more than five decades of service in the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
