Energy drinks смотреть последние обновления за сегодня на .
Apparently, like many indulgences, too much of a good thing can be bad for you. It's not just the caffeine that can give you the jitters additives like guarana, ginseng and taurine can also play havoc with your health. Now, the American Medical Association has called for a ban on marketing of energy drinks to children, while doctors continue to press the FDA to require the makers of these popular drinks to better identify what's in them and to restrict caffeine levels. © 2013 Dartmouth-Hitchcock

Shirin Ghaffary weighs the potential health risks of drinking energy drinks, and compares them to other sugary, caffeinated beverages. What do you think should the U.S. ban energy drinks for minors? SUBSCRIBE to Above the Noise: 🤍 ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and takes a deeper look at the research behind issues that affect you. Hosted by Myles Bess and Shirin Ghaffary. *NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEDNESDAY* We’ve all been there needing to stay awake, but our body refusing to cooperate. We hear they are bad for us, but sometimes we reach for energy drinks like Redbull, Monster, and Rockstar to help us out. Or maybe we drink them just because we like the boost it gives us, or we simply like the taste. Whatever the reason, energy drinks are a billion dollar industry and their popularity keeps growing despite health concerns. We are warned they are particularly dangerous for children and teens and there’s even been reports of deaths linked to energy drink consumption. In fact, in 2011 the American Academy of Pediatrics, an organization of 60,000 pediatricians recommended kids and teens should never drink energy drinks. In 2013, the American Medical Association got involved and called for a ban in advertising energy drinks to people under 18. And some people want to take this further and actually ban the sale of energy drinks to minors. In fact, Lithuania was the first country to enact such a ban. In response to these health concerns, the American Beverage Association, the trade group that represents many of the energy drink brands, have created their own guidelines around marketing and labeling of the drinks. For example they do not market these drinks to children under 12 and they don’t sell them in K-12 schools. In this video we take a closer look at the science to see if energy drinks are really as bad as the hype, and what it is about them that has doctors concerned. Caffeinated energy drinks can sometimes kill, but that's not something the Canadian government tells you. Many people have suffered various health problems, sometimes serious, after consuming these drinks containing stimulants. Symptoms include heart palpitations, convulsions and even respiratory distress. But Enquête’s investigation has discovered that following a regulatory change in 2013, Health Canada is no longer releasing this information. The responsibility for reporting adverse effects has been turned over to the industry itself, which often prefers omerta to transparency. In Canada, Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar all lobby hard to ensure that health problems associated with their products are not made public. Caffeine levels in some energy drinks can be very high. Often combined with large amounts of sugar, these energy drinks may pose a health risk. Research continues to show an increasing amount of negative impacts from large doses of caffeine and sugar. Recommendations for caffeine intake are up to 400mg a day and no more than 200mg in a single dose. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the energy drinks with the highest caffeine. A busy professional, Peter McCartney uses energy drinks, in part, to fuel his day. "Just for extra energy, it always gives you a boost. Come 3 o'clock or maybe just after lunch, have an energy drink. Or maybe first thing in the morning," says McCartney. A typical can has up to three times as much caffeine as soda or coffee and many contain a stimulant called taurine along with other ingredients. McCartney sampled several, including one that made his heart race. "When I drink that one, I actually feel like a flush. And it almost tingles on the body," says McCartney. "People think it's going to burst your energy level, they feel very strong and also they use it as a supplement for weight loss," says Dr. Murali Muppala, cardiologist with Lee Memorial Health System. To get a true picture of what the buzz is about, researchers took a detailed MRI of healthy test subjects before and after downing a highly caffeinated energy drink with taurine. An hour later they still had significantly increased heart rates. "All the medications that have a stimulant effect can make your heart go, number one faster; and if you take too much of it, it can make significant cardiac arrhythmias. Sometimes just palpitations or sometimes life threatening arrhythmias if it is toxic levels," says Dr. Muppala. Downing drinks once in a while may not be an issue, but doctors are unsure about long-term affects of being constantly amped up. "Every dose adds up. When someone is excited it's what we call sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity. If you have on-going effect this can have a detrimental effect on your heart system," says Dr. Muppala. The same could be said for jumbo hi-caff coffee drinks too. As sales of energy drinks skyrocket so do concerns about their safety. Do these quick, cheap energy aids deliver on their promise or are they dangerous cocktails taking a toll on our health? A growing body of research links energy drink consumption to cardiovascular risk, in extreme cases causing death, as well as to other health concerns such as headaches, anxiety, insomnia, hallucinations and seizures. But what exactly is an energy drink - Is it a soft drink, a supplement, or a potentially toxic cocktail? Anja Taylor investigates. 🤍 🤍 🤍ABCCatalyst

There are pros and cons to any sports drink. Some athletes like sports drinks because the sports drink provides energy and prevents dehydration. However, these sports drinks may also contain a lot of calories and sugar. Only drink a sports drink if you are going to be participating in a sport for a long time - over an hour. You should not drink these casually if you're not working out. Energy drinks, on the other hand, should never be used for hydration purposes under any cirumstance. They are not regulated or approved by the Food and Drug Administration and may contain ingredients that actually harm the athlete. It's always best for athletes to prepare for their sport by maintaining a healthy, full diet and drinking plenty of water. Are energy drinks actually healthy? Find Out More at drberg.com: 🤍 Recharge your cells with Dr. Berg’s Electrolyte Powder: 🤍 Timestamps 0:03 Benefits of energy drinks 0:13 Energy drinks side effects 0:24 The danger of energy drinks 0:36 A closer look at energy drinks ingredients 1:13 The sugar in energy drinks 3:06 What to look for in energy drinks 3:59 About electrolytes 4:20 About potassium and magnesium 5:00 How to get the benefits of an electrolyte drink Today, we’re going to talk about the benefits of energy drinks. In theory, energy drinks are supposed to help increase brain energy, exercise performance, and endurance. However, most energy drinks will actually cause brain fog, less exercise performance, and the ingredients will deplete the cells. The big problem with energy drinks is that the ingredients don’t give you real energy. These drinks are composed mostly of caffeine and sugar. Caffeine is not a fuel. It’s a stimulant. It makes you think you have energy, but really it’s just revving up your adrenal glands. There are also crazy amounts of sugar in energy drinks, which will make you more tired and grumpy, and will make you want another energy drink. A lot of this sugar is not just glucose. It’s fructose. These drinks also contain a lot of sodium and not enough potassium. You need to look for an energy drink that has all of the electrolytes. Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals that help to energize your cells. Potassium helps recharge the battery in your cells. Magnesium feeds the mitochondria. If you really want to get the benefits of an electrolyte drink, make sure it has zero caffeine, zero sugar, and it’s filled with a good amount of electrolytes. Whether you’re trying to lose weight, tone up, or just stay awake, there are hundreds of supplements offering a quick fix to your problem. But when it comes to energy supplements, health experts at Lee Memorial Health System say, consume with caution. “If you see the word stimulant you need to be a little bit careful,” said Dr. Richard Chazal, a cardiologist with Lee Memorial Health System. He says the stimulant can increase a person’s heart rate and blood pressure. “A lot of these also have a lot of sugar and therefore a lot of calories. For those of us who are trying to watch our weight and reduce the likelihood of developing obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes, be careful. Some of them can have a lot of sodium or salt in them, and that can be problematic,” said Dr. Chazal. Energy drinks aren’t the only concern. Dr. Chazal says pre-work out supplements or weight loss supplements can also cause health problems over time. “Some of the supplements that are taken by people who are trying to build muscle also can create some problems possibly with heart disease but also with muscles and kidney function.” It’s important to know what ingredients are in the supplements. Creatine, for example, can clog your kidneys over time. The ingredient can be found in some energy drinks, even pre-work out supplements. If you need a burst of energy there are other options. “The best studies available right now do not indicate that coffee or caffeine lead to heart disease” said Dr. Chazal. Just be mindful of the amount of sugar and other ingredients added to the caffeine. Even though caffeine has been thought to keep you awake and alert, more is not always better. Five Hour Energy shots contain fairly high amounts of caffeine. Like any caffeine product, these drinks can make you feel jittery, nervous, and dizzy. Common side effects include a fast heartbeat, a rise in blood pressure, headaches, and trouble sleeping. In addition, these shots contain the vitamin niacin which may cause some people to experience flushing (hot feeling, skin redness). This is caused by increased blood flow near the skin. A small number of deaths have been reported and associated with energy drinks - mostly from inappropriate use and over consumption. The FDA continues to investigate reports of illness, injury or death of people who took products marketed as “energy drinks.” A number of products that combine caffeine and alcohol have been removed over the years due to safety concerns. Ask your doctor and pharmacist any questions you may have about 5 hour energy

New research in Pediatrics in Review warns that the side effects of highly caffeinated energy drinks, often marketed to young people, can be dangerous for teens, especially when combined with alcohol. Large energy drinks have about 160 mg of caffeine. The average cup of coffee has about 100 mg of caffeine. The report says energy drinks can cause high blood pressure, affect sleep patterns and lead to obesity. How do these energy drinks affect the body? What are the implications for future research and public policy? Learn more from Erin Hager, PhD, assistant professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology & Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Hager's research focuses on the development of valid assessment techniques relating to obesity prevention. She works to ensure that children growing up in low-income urban communities have opportunities for physical activity and to avoid obesity.
