Harmonics in Electrical Systems Harmonics affect the quality of AC electricity delivered via the power grid. Left unaddressed, harmonics can increase your energy costs, degrade system performance, and shorten the lifetime of your equipment – and in some cases, even raise personnel safety issues. This video presents a quick overview of harmonics and how they affect electrical systems. We explain what harmonics are and how they are generated in electrical transmission lines. We also list several ways harmonics can negatively impact your facility. We conclude the video with a brief tour of some of the power quality instruments offered by AEMC for measuring and analyzing harmonics, an essential first step for devising a strategy for harmonics mitigation. In this video we are going to study what harmonics are and what loads generate them. We are going to see the concept of linear and non-linear load. I will introduce the basic tool for the analysis of harmonics, that is, the Fast Fourier Transformation, thanks to which power quality analyzers will be able to decompose signals into fundamental components and harmonics. We will see how to measure each harmonic and also two parameters that will help us to have a more general vision such as the THD or Total Harmonic Distortion and the TDD or Total Demand Distortion. We will use the EN50160 and IEEE519 standards to set limits to these parameters. Finally, we will see how to use the Fluke 435 SII analyzer to study harmonics.

This video is based on material from Jim Phillips Power Systems Engineering live stream course 🤍 In this video, Jim answers the question, “What Are Harmonics?” What are harmonics and how do they get into the power system? Electrical power system harmonics are multiples of a fundamental frequency typically 60 Hz. or 50 Hz. Jim walks you through multiple harmonic wave graphs and the math of harmonics and frequency overlay and some of the distortion that can occur. Six-pulse waveform has a lot of different harmonics that make it up based on certain types of loads. Like certain types of drives, rectifiers, resulting in the input current resembling as if it’s pulsed in six separate pulses instead of a clean sine wave. Jim then goes into a diagram explanation of harmonics analysis. The way that most harmonics get into the power system is the load, if you have a load that is distorting, or pulsing, or changing the characteristic of a current, that current can be rich in harmonics. Non-linear loads are the biggest source of harmonics that can create serious problems on an electrical system.
