I'm going to go over five basic fundamentals that you should know for indoor rock climbing. One of the first fundamentals is just general body awareness and being able to identify your center of gravity. You want to use that to be able to keep your weight in balance, which would be the second fundamental, learning how to balance and shift your weight. And once you've identified that center of gravity, keeping that weight over your feet, so you're going to be pushing with your legs, rather than pulling with your arms, which brings us to the next fundamental, of climbing with straight arms. Using this position is much more beneficial as far as the efficiency of your movement goes. Right now, with my arms straight, I'm not taking any energy to pull myself in. You can see my left leg is bent here, so as I initiate this movement up, I'll be pushing rather than pulling. That allows for much more efficient motion. We also have two other basic fundamental techniques, known as edging and flagging. Edging is when you're using your climbing shoes to basically be edging on a hold. So, I can use both the inside edge and the outside edge of my climbing shoes. Both should be applied frequently to change your body position and help you move in balance. For example, I can use the outside edge of my right foot here to keep my right hip close to the wall, so that as I move up, that center of gravity is going to stay over my let, allowing me to push, rather than pull. I've also grabbed that next hold with a straight arm, rather than with a bent arm, saving me a little bit of energy. Flagging is a technique that's fundamental, once again, for keeping your balance. Flagging comes in handy when all of the holds are on the same side of your body. Right now, to stay in balance, it'd be a little tricky for me to move without having my body kind of swing around a little bit, which is a big waste of energy. So, with one foot up, with my right hand and my right foot inline, I can flag my left foot to help keep that center of gravity better aligned. What that would look like while moving, would be either flagging in this direction to keep that center of gravity centered over my foot, or if I switch hands and feet, I can flag in the other direction to highlight the same principle. All right, so that was five fundamentals for rock climbing indoors.

Learning to climb can be a bit daunting for beginners. You need to know how to navigate the gym, what rock climbing gear to buy/rent, and generally might be intimidated by the lingo everyone is using, not to mention the climbing and belaying training you have to go through. Anytime you get into something new, these feelings come up. Yet it doesn't need to be like this, which brings us to the point of our BLUF videos. Hopefully this rock climbing video gives you a little bit of knowledge of the sport and an idea of how much fun climbing can be so you can make the decision on jumping in or looking elsewhere. Indoor and Outdoor climbing are two branches of the same tree, but now more than ever they can differ in how we must approach training and performance. We are joined by Aiden Dunne, a top level competition climber and Lattice coach, to cover his top 5 tactics and training methods to better your indoor climbing. First up is a 'play session'. No rules here but we give you some pointers in how to make the most out of your wall and ways to get really creative. Next is learning the tactics for those pesky slopers. Love them or hate them, slopers are very unforgiving to poor body positioning. We then cover a great method for breaking into the next grade boundary. If your gym sets in circuits like our favourite centre (Depot Sheffield) you may know the frustration of trying to progress to the next level in circuits. Don't worry, Aiden has got you covered. Aiden then covers an important part of indoor technique, moving dynamically into the 'end position'. With modern setting it is common that you will need to land perfectly in a body position before you can even start applying tension to the holds. Lastly we hit the weights room to build strength in the upperbody, needed for wrestling the big blobs and macro holds that are now super popular with modern setting. Aiden gives us his 3 favourite exercises with sets and reps. Find out more about our Lattice Training Plans here: 🤍 Download the Crimpd App: App store - 🤍 Google Play - 🤍

I built my kids an indoor climbing wall, it was super fun to make! TOOLS & SUPPLIES (affiliate links): 🤍 🤍 In our old house I built a huge climbing wall in our backyard. With the renovation of the boys' bedroom almost completed, I thought it was a perfect time to rebuild that fun rock wall in the their room. First, here is a safety disclaimer...I built this wall for my kids in a manner that I am completely confident in. I don't know your room layout and I don't know your kids abilities. If you want to build a wall yourself, awesome! But you are assuming all responsibility and risk in doing so (that said, it is pretty awesome and you should go make one). I began this project by measuring out the space in the room and making a digital copy of it (Its been very helpful for me lately), being sure to accurately measure the ceiling pitch. I then mapped out the placement of some drop-in, 2x4 walls that would support the 3/4 inch plywood faces. I cut and nailed the wall pieces together and screwed them to the existing room studs with some massive lag screws. I translated the ceiling pitch to the angled wall section and used a bird's mouth cut at the end of the 2x4 so that those joists would sit on the header of the wall below it. Once the walls were framed in place, I broke down the sheets of 3/4 inch plywood to cover each section. I made sure to mark out the location of the new wall studs on the plywood so that I could secure them together, but it also helped me identify where to NOT place the holes for the climbing holds. On the plywood, I marked out a geometric grid that would become the locations for a bunch of T-nuts. These pronged nuts will receive the bolts that attach the climbing holds to the wall. The grid allows you to change up the arrangement later if you wanted. After drilling the grid holes and hammering in the T-nuts, we mounted each plywood face to the framed-in walls. Accurately measuring the space was crucial when putting up the faces, each piece fit together in an angular puzzle that turned out amazing. All that was left to do was to place the climbing holds and bolt them to the T-nuts. This was pretty erratic, but it allowed for different skill levels in different areas. I even got to use the hand hold that I made using a silicone mold. After I throughly tested out the wall, I let my kids go nuts. They really love this new awesome addition to their room and I'm really happy they have an area to be wild and crazy kids. If you liked this project, check out more of my work using the links above!
