Manganese is a coenzyme; in other words, a helper enzyme involved in making proteins. In this case, bone and connective tissue, which together mean your joints. If you’re protein deficient, you may have knee pain, shoulder pain, or problems with your ligaments, for example. Let’s say your mother was deficient in manganese when she was carrying you. You could end up with flat feet, or problems with your skeletal structure. You could also have muscle spasms, inflammation (because manganese is involved with very powerful antioxidants), or a build-up of ammonia. Manganese is part of your defense mechanism to protect you against damage from free radicals. As a side note, a bacteria called deinococcus radiodurans is the toughest bacteria on earth. It can withstand over 500,000 rads of ionizing radiation. Pretty amazing when you consider 100 rads can kill a person. They can also survive extreme cold and dehydration. They use manganese to protect against free radicals. Foods that are high in manganese include: ● Cloves ● Pecans ● Grains (of course, I don’t recommend these) ● Tea (consume in small amounts since their tannins block manganese) ● Spinach (though it ends up not being a good source because of its oxalates) ● Pumpkin seeds ● Kale ● Squash ● Sea kelp You can see why I recommend you eat a varied diet rather than just the same thing every day. Certain involuntary movements can even be caused by taking psych drugs or tranquilizers for a period of time. Involuntary muscle jerks and other tics can also occur from having had damage to the extrapyramidal part of the brain. The extrapyramidal is a certain part of the brain involved in suppressing these abnormal muscle movements. Interestingly, this part of the brain needs a lot of manganese to function.  There has been research done on taking 10mg of manganese 3 times a day and improving these symptoms.  You may be taking something that’s depleting your manganese or other nutrients, and not consuming foods high in a certain nutrient. Manganese is in foods like spinach, almonds, and bran. However, these foods also block the absorption of manganese. If you have these symptoms, I don’t think you will be able to get enough manganese through your diet. Supplements might be your best option. Note: A good portion of the MnO2 from these batteries is actually carbon. It still worked for my bromine synthesis, but it is something to keep in mind. - Hello everyone. In this video, I get manganese dioxide, zinc and carbon from Zinc-Carbon batteries. There is a significant amount of carbon in the MnO2. It is not worth the time to try to separate it out though, unless you need pure MnO2. I used the manganese dioxide to make some bromine. This was filmed in 4K and will be uploaded eventually. The MnO2 can also be used to generate oxygen from hydrogen peroxide. I go over this in my liquid oxygen video and oxygen generator video. After the manganese heptoxide video on NileRed, I had a lot of manganese and acid waste that I had to deal with. I initially planned to be done after isolating the waste, but as the last minute, I decided to try melting it. I don't consider that to be part of the waste processing though, and it's more of an experiment on its own. In general, I don't recommend heating waste because it can sometimes be dangerous and it can also generate toxic fumes. I synthesise a small quantity of manganese metal from manganese sulfate by electrolysis. Despite the simplicity of the idea, generating manganese metal through aqueous electrolysis has a few barriers, mainly the fact that the reduction potential of manganese is much lower than that for water, and thus the electrolysis process will always favour the production of hydrogen over manganese. To get around this, we set up a divided cell to electrolyse our manganese salt, and succeed in making a small amount of metal over the course of 24 hours.
