Today we are going to make aravana payasam or nei payasam. This payasam is made while going on a pilgrimage to Sabarimalai. It is also served in Guruvaypor temples all over India as prasad. This payasam does not contain milk or coconut milk. So it will not get spoiled easily. I know many of you might be wondering if red rice is a must. Well, you can make this payasam with regular rice / khane ka chawal too. But the traditional recipe calls for red rice. So,if you can get red rice, make with it. If you can't then use regular raw rice / khaane ka chawal. But do not use basmati rice. We have taken 1.25 cups of red rice. 1 cup is 250 ml in our recipes. But you can use any cup or glass. Only make sure that you use the same cup throughout the recipe for measuring all ingredients be it rice or jaggery or ghee or water. Ingredients: Red rice 1 heaping cup / 200:g jaggery 500 g 2.5 heaping cups ghee 1 cup sliced coconut 1 cup Dry ginger powder Wash the rice well and add it to a heavy-bottomed vessel. Do not cook this rice in a pressure cooker as it will turn very sticky if you do. Now I am adding 5 cups water to the rice. I am using the same measuring cup that I used for measuring rice. Cook on a high flame until one boil. Add 2 tbsp ghee Don't cook in a pressure cooker as it can turn sticky. Make sure that the rice is well cooked before you add the jaggery. Once the jaggery is added the rice will not get cooked any further. And not only does it not get cooked, but it will also harden. Keep the flame high up to 1 boil. After 1 boil, lower the flame and cover and cook Add 3 cups of water to the jaggery. Heat the ⛽ Check the rice. If it is soft and cooked switch off the flame After the jaggery is melted add to the cooked rice Keep flame high now Add ginger powder When jaggery comes to a boil add 2 tbsp ghee Keep adding ghee in intervals Do not cover the payasam with a lid Keep stirring the payasam until it thickens Do not let the payasam turn too thick as it will turn thicker and drier after it cools down. Do not add cardamom powder Remember to add ghee in between Let it thicken until ghee forms a layer on top As it thickens, lower the flame Cook on a low flame for 10 minutes After 10 minutes,you will see ghee at the corners of the pan. Switch off the flame In 1/4 cup of ghee fry the sliced 🥥 coconuts Coconuts should be golden brown. Cook on low flame so that it is cooked from within Add fried coconut pieces to payasam. Great tasting Hayagreeva Maddi recipe prepared using the richness of Chana Dal, Coconut, Pure Ghee, Jaggery, and Dry Fruits. Narrated in Kannada. #hayagreeva #maddirecipe #hayagivarecipe Hayagreeva Maddi is a sweet recipe popular among Madhwa Brahmins and often served as prasadam in Udupi Mutt and Raghavendra temple. It is easy to prepare yet tasty with the goodness of Dal, Ghee, Dry Fruits, Poppy Seeds, and Coconut. Ingredients: Bengal Gram or Kadlebele - 1 Cup Water - 3 Cups Powdered Jaggery - 1 and 1/4 Cup Ghee or Clarified Butter - 1/4 Cup Grated Dry Coconut or Desiccated Coconut - 1/4 Cup Broken Cashew Nuts - 15-20 Raisins - 10-15 Poppy Seeds / Gasgase - 2 Tbsp Cardamom Powder - 1 tsp Method: 1. Add 1 Cup Bengal Gram or Kadalebele to the cooker. Wash them in water 2-3 times. 2. For 1 Cup Bengal Gram, add 3 Cups of water and close the lid. Allow cooking until you hear 5-6 whistles. Bengal Gram should become slightly soft, but it should not be mashed or mushy. Keep aside. 3. Add 1/4 cup grated Dry Coconut or Copra to a pan. Roast in medium flame for 5 minutes. Roast till you can smell the roasted aroma from Dry Coconut and then switch off the flame. Transfer to a plate and allow to cool completely. 4. Add 1 Tbsp Ghee to the pan. Add 15-20 Cashew Nuts and roast the same. Once they turn golden in color, remove them to a bowl. 5. To the same pan with Ghee, add 15-20 Raisins and roast the same. Transfer the roasted Raisins to another bowl. 6. Add 2 Tbsp Poppy Seeds and roast in Ghee. Roast for just 2-3 minutes. Once you smell of roasted aroma arrives from the Poppy Seeds, remove it immediately and transfer it to a bowl. 7. Add cooked Bengal Gram to a big pan. 8. Add 1 and 1/4 Cup Powdered Jaggery. Mix the ingredients while cooking. Once Jaggery melts, the mixture turns watery. Allow to cook while you keep mixing the ingredients. While cooking, the Dal will absorb the Jaggery and water and turn thick. 9. Mix continuously to avoid the mixture sticking to the bottom of the pan while it is turning thick. Dal will absorb water and the mixture will turn thick. 10. Add 2 Tbsp Ghee and mix well. 11. Once the Ghee is absorbed, add roasted Dry Coconut, Roasted Cashew Nuts, and Raisins and mix well. 12. Now add Ghee roasted Poppy Seeds and mix well. Add 1 tsp Cardamom Powder and mix well. 13. Once the Hayagreeva turns thick switch off the flame.

Parts of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will witness on December 26 an annular solar eclipse, where the Sun appears as a ring (annulus) around the Moon. Solar eclipse is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth. This annular solar eclipse will also be visible from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam. When can I see the eclipse? The partial eclipse will begin at 8.04 a.m. when the moon 'touches' the sun’s edge, and at 9.24 a.m. the annular phase will start and the full eclipse would be visible. At 9.26 a.m., the maximum eclipse would occur, when the moon is closest to the centre of the sun. By 9.27 a.m. the full eclipse will end, and by 11.05 a.m. the moon will leave the edges of the sun, ending the partial eclipse. The total eclipse will last for 3.12 minutes. The eclipse will start in Qatar, the UAE, Oman and due to its geological positioning, Cheruvathur (Kerala) will be the first place in India where it will be very visible,” said Sachin Bamba of Space India, which works in the field of astronomy education. How to safely watch an eclipse: It is not advisable to look at the Sun during a solar eclipse with naked eyes. Only eclipse glasses that have a certification with "ISO 12312-2 international standard" are safe for use, according to NASA. Other options are the number 14 welder's glass, or a pinhole projector that allows a user to project the image of the sun on paper or cardboard. It is safe to eat, drink and carry out your daily activities during an eclipse.
